Mack Brown's Timing Sucks
Mack Brown said this a couple of weeks ago:
By speaking out now, Brown looks like he's only protesting because it affects his team. Pretty disingenuous. He should have spoken out about the need for a playoff system when his team won the BCS in 2005. He should have spoken out about the need for a playoff system when his team was 9-5 and wasn't one of the top 8 teams in 1999.
He should speak out for a playoff system each and every offseason, when the BCS committee meets and the rules are actually changed. If he doesn't do this, his "protest" of the BCS will do more harm than good. He'll just be another guy who bitched about something when it affected him - and not someone actually trying to make the sport better.
"Send the best eight teams and let them play it off," Brown said. "There’s a lot of good teams that are going to be left out of the BCS this year. What I would welcome is more conversation [about changing the BCS system]. I really wish we could hammer out some ideas and get it down to what’s workable ... whether we do it now or three or four years from now. In most years, there are going to be six to 10 teams better than the others and it’s tough to say who is best without a playoff."I couldn't agree more with him, Division 1-A College Football desperately needs a playoff system. The problem is that Coach Brown is pushing for a playoff system at exactly the wrong time. His team, Texas, is ranked #3 in the BCS, and was just pushed out of the Big 12 Championship Game because Oklahoma is ranked #2. Although it's still possible the Longhorns could make the BCS Championship without playing in their conference championship game, it's not likely.
