Training My Mind

  • Was told I had bird shit on my shirt in the middle of a meeting at work, and I did
  • Sneezed while holding a cup of coffee and spilled it all over the place
  • Missed the subway by a split-second because I stopped to tighten and re-tie my shoe lace just before I went down the tunnel
  • Got a haircut and immediately afterwords realized it was way too short and looked stupid
  • Thought I got a bargain on flights to Florida, then paid a ton in extra fees to reserve specific seats and check bags
  • "Pocket dialed" someone I did not want to talk to because I'm still getting used to locking the keypad on my cell phone after having a flip phone for years
  • Had my iPod go crazy making it unable to maintain any volume on my commute to work

All of these things happened to me over the last couple weeks. Some of them made me angry, others embarrassed, others made me laugh, and still others generated no real positive or negative reaction at all.  What I've come to realize is that by looking at this list alone, it's actually impossible to tell which reaction I had to which event. The fact is, it was my mindset at the time that controlled and led to the reaction I had. Apologies for the personal-revelation post, but I think this kind of stuff is interesting and pretty practical. At least that's what I'm thinking right now. Let's see how I react the next time my flight is delayed or I get shit on....

    You are right on! The saying "As you think, so shall you be" is literally true. We all know people who are just itching to be unhappy. They wouldn't have it any other way. Call it mindset, attitude, point of view, hatever. It controls everything. It's not "out there", it's all in your mind. Change your mind, and change yur world. Try it next time when someone cuts you off in traffic. CHOOSE not to be annoyed. It works. Boomer
