The Chinglish Debate

James Fallows has a great post about "Chinglish", the screwed up English translations on many signs and other public displays in China.  On the one hand, isn't it extremely arrogant of native English speakers to make fun of these mistakes - when most of us have absolutely no knowledge of Mandarin or Cantonese?  On the other hand, would it be too much for the Chinese to have someone with decent English skills to review public signs before trusting the word-for-word translation programs?  On top of this debate, it's hard to deny how funny Chinglish can be.
