Equal Rights For All

The California Supreme Court ruled today that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry. This is not only a big step for gay and lesbian people everywhere, but also a big step for our country. I know a large part of the country will never agree, but with time, I think gays and lesbians in every state will eventually receive the equal rights they deserve.

At previous times in our country's history, many people didn't believe that non-land owners, women, and blacks should have equal rights. With time, and a lot of fight, they have all received their rights under the law.

Often times it's extremely difficult to change an adult's mind. No matter how logical the argument, some people just put up walls and refuse to budge. Their mind is made up and they don't understand why the new generation thinks the way it does. It's for this reason that many social issues will only come to a reasonable conclusion when new generations become the decision makers of the day. I know this opinion requires a lot of optimism about future generations, but I've had a good day - so today, I'll take it as a given.
