Voting on Tuesday?

In honor of the North Carolina and Indiana Democratic (Tuesday) Primaries today, here are some words from Chris Rock from Friday night:

"The biggest lie is that the government wants you to vote. If they did, we wouldn't vote on a Tuesday. In November. You ever throw a party on a Tuesday? No. Because nobody would come."

I won't go so far as to say the government doesn't want us to vote, but I will say that Tuesday voting is a great example of the incredible stupidity (and rigidity) of some government rules. According to a report from NPR, we vote on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November because in the mid 19th century we were an agrarian, Christian society. November was chosen because it was after the harvest. Tuesday was chosen because it took a long time for many people to travel to polling places. Sunday is the Sabbath for Christians and Monday would require Sunday travel. The first Tuesday after the first Monday of the month rule was put in place because November 1st is All-Saints Day, a holy day for Christians.

Given all of these reasons and the fact that most of America now works Monday to Friday, it seems to me that moving our voting day to a weekend would really make a lot of sense. I'm guessing we'll get this done sometime in the 2050s.
