Homeless in Nike Shox
Walking home from work today, I saw a homeless guy rummaging through a trashcan. Even as sanitized as Midtown Manhattan is these days, this isn't exactly a rare sight. As I was passing by, however, I noticed this particular homeless guy was wearing Nike Shox. He was wearing a shitty coat, and dirty, ripped pants - but he had Nike Shox on his feet. For those of you that don't know, Nike Shox are nice sneakers. Ok, they're not the $150+ sneaker they once were, but they're still decent sneaker.
This got me to thinking.....How rich is a country where the homeless wear Nike Shox? Don't get me wrong, I'm sure this guy has a tough life. By no means am I trying to demean his decisions, thoughts, or way of life. But a homeless guy in Nike Shox?
As I walked on, I started thinking - was this the perfect symbol of American wealth and the unbalanced treatment of its underclass? Or did it just show how rich Manhattan is - and how Manhattan homeless might have it a little "better" than the rest of the homeless world? Or was this just a drunk guy who got lucky and found good sneakers in a trashcan? As I walked and continued my internal debate, I saw a different homeless guy drinking a Starbucks and my head exploded.
